Zojoji Temple in Snow

Description

Zojoji Temple in Snow forms an instructive point of comparison between Tsuchiya Koitsu and other Shin-hanga artists, such as Kasamatsu Shiro and Kawase Hasui, who depicted the same temple in snow as well. The compositions are somewhat similar, with the large red temple gate contrasting with the white snow and the people walking in front of it. All succeed in evoking the scene's atmosphere; the subject was evidently already popular with the original audience for these prints.
