About — Nipponprints

At Nipponprints, I curate and sell Japanese woodblock prints. The collection ranges from early ukiyo-e and museum-grade shin-hanga pieces, to novel works by contemporary artists and prints struck from original woodblocks this very year.

In my view, this range is part of one large art tradition of interconnected works. Woodblock artists like Hokusai and Kawase Hasui could never have achieved their heights had their art not been affordable to many initially and printed in large quantities. This is what allowed many artists, artisans, craftsmen, paper-makers and publishers to be involved in the process, leading to some of the most sought-after multiples today. My two goals at Nipponprints are inspired by this, and reflect this:

  • To provide a high-quality venue for the sale of museum-grade Japanese woodblock prints, based on selective curation, expertise and research.
  • To provide a service-oriented place for the sale of the best recently printed, affordable woodblock prints, to be collected and to decorate homes around the world.

The first goal connects to masters of the past, the second helps to give space to those of today and the future, while making the art accessible to a broad audience of enthusiasts.
