Description

The present design is a rare early Shin-hanga print. Merritt's Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints states that the artist created designs circa 1924 in Kyoto for Sato Shotaro, but very little is known about Yamada Bito's prints. His publisher Sato Shotaro was an early Kyoto-based competitor of Watanabe Shozaburo. He too knew older Ukiyo-e prints well and had international contacts, as evidenced by a number of sales by him to the British Museum. Such a background must have helped him, just as it did for Watanabe, and he succeeded in producing a number of Shin-hanga designs relatively early, of which the two by Yamada Bito are among the earliest.

Condition notes

The print is in good condition. There are a number of foxing and some browning within the image, most pronounced in the sky above the temple and below the geese. On the verso, remnants of a previous mounting remain, and there is a note in pencil and a collector stamp.
