Description

Snow in Kamigamo Shrine, Kyoto depicts an imposing shrine gate, the beauty of the red gate enhanced by a covering of white snow and a man and a woman defying the winter cold to visit. The design for the woodblock print was made by Takeji Asano for woodblock print publisher Usodo, which has published new editions from the original woodblocks well into the Reiwa period. A few years into the Reiwa period, new blocks were carved for subsequent editions, with the resulting prints remarkably close to those of recent impressions of the original blocks. The tower gate depicted is the Romon Gate of the Kamigamo Shrine complex in Kyoto, one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan, where to this day many people come to pray.
