Shintaro Okazaki – Snowy day at the five-storied pagoda in Ueno

Original woodblock print. The first edition of this design was published in 1954. The current print was printed in the Reiwa period (2019 – present).

With ‘Snowy Day at the Five-Storied Pagoda,’ Shintaro Okazaki created an absolutely stunning Shin-hanga design. One cannot help but wonder why he only made a few designs, as the ones he crafted must have been quite successful. In general, however, not much is known about Shintaro Okazaki’s life, so no information is available to answer this question. In the end, we are left with a unique scene to enjoy, with the wild snow depicted in a way unlike any other Shin-hanga artist has ever done.
