Description

Godaido shrine is a popular subject for artists to depict. Almost all the artworks show it from a distance, along with one or more neighboring islands, for which Matsushima is famous. Kasamatsu Shiro's woodblock print is unusual in that it places the viewer on the island of the Godaido shrine itself, right next to the wooden pillars of the shrine. These pillars show an interesting and effective technique, as they are placed on foundation stones to prevent rot, but are not affixed to the stones, allowing leeway during earthquakes and enabling them to absorb part of the shock. Though secondary, here Kasamatsu Shiro gave the pillars yet another purpose, as they serve as windows in his composition, and sure enough, many other islands are visible through them, as might be hard for any artist to resist showing.
