Description

The present design is one of the earliest Shin-hanga prints, born from the newly started collaboration between Fritz Capelari and Watanabe Shozaburo. Waves of Renewal notes how the composition, with the figure against a plain background, is reminiscent of the depiction of beautiful women by Suzuki Harunobu, reflecting Watanabe's aim to revive and renew the ukiyo-e tradition, rather than replace it. A variant is known, with the woman looking more in the direction of the Pekingese, possibly evidence of extended attempts to achieve the captivating strength of the design in its current form. The Pekingese is looking directly at the viewer, as if they had just entered, drawing them into the scene.

Condition notes

The print is in fair state, with various defects. It has aged and most importantly there is a damaged line in the middle of the image where there was a tear that has been restored partly by backing the print.
