Looking Back – Blue Cat is Nishida Tadashige’s most sought after design. It was printed fairly recently, in the years from 2018 to 2022, but sold out much faster than designs that seem similar, but utilize different colors.

Japanese woodblock print artists have always excelled in depicting animals in non-materialistic ways, letting their behaviors, moods and even characters shine through. This can already be seen in the 19th century prints of, for example, Hiroshige, and artists like Nishida Tadashige continue this tradition in contemporary prints. Whereas ukiyo-e artists often depicted birds, Nishida Tadashige has specialized in cat prints, and reached an unparalleled level, as evidenced by the current design.
