Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) – Evening Snow at Edo River (Hasui Kawase – Fururu Yuki – Edogawa)
Original woodblock print. The first edition of this design was published in 1932. The current print was printed in the Reiwa period (2019 – present).
Two women cross a bridge over the Edo River on a winter evening, protected with umbrellas against calm snowfall. This is a very popular design by Kawase Hasui, and many variants are known. A quite common variant is even completely in tones of white and blue, but here the multicoloured version is shown. Kawase Hasui displayed a wide variety of themes, but together with night landscapes, winter scenes such as this one were one of his specialities.
