Ayaoka Yushin (1846-1910) – Urami Falls
Original woodblock print. The first edition of this design was published in 1904. The current print was printed in the Meiji period (1868 – 1912).
The current print is part of a series depicting scenic views of Nikko. Part of these views, and of the series, are the waterfalls of Nikko, often depicted by woodblock artists, with the Urami Falls being one of the most famous.
Publisher: Akiyama Buemon
Series: Fine Views of Nikko
Image size (excluding margins): 33.0 * 22.5 cm (13.0 * 8.9 in).
The print is in fair state. There are various signs of aging, a strong wrinkle in the lower left corner and there is soiling in many places. On the back there are scribbles in pencil.
The pictures shown here are from the print itself.

Ayaoka Yushin (1846 – 1910) is an artist about whom little is known, besides the artworks left to us. He was a painter, a woodblock artist, and a student of Shibata Zeshin. His prints are grounded in the Ukiyo-e school, even though he was active late in the 19th century. Though the prints were clearly successful artistically, we speculate that not many were printed, as they are only rarely encountered in the market.
